Do you ever feel alone?
Do you often feel unaccepted by people?
Does it feel like there is no place where you truly fit in?
Do you sometimes feel like a misfit in social situations?
Do you feel like an observer rather than a participant in life?
One of the things common to all people across wealth, gender, race or religion is the need to belong and be accepted by others. Because as humans, we are all social creatures… we all need to belong.
Research shows that people who belong to groups are happier. If you are feeling lonely finding a growth-oriented and supportive group will help you find purpose in your life. When we experience a sense of connection, it improves our motivation, health, and happiness.
Feeling like you belong somewhere or with a group is good for your mental well-being. But, being with the wrong people can sometimes hold us back.
Studies have demonstrated that when we have an ongoing sense of belonging it will affect your motivation and your positive persistence on goals, especially the seemingly impossible ones. Basically, when you don’t feel like you belong, you are both less motivated and less likely to hang in… in the face of obstacles. Lack of consistent, positive and supportive relationships has been associated with a large range of consequences. People who lack belongingness are more prone to behavioral problems such as offensive behavior, suicide, and suffer from increasing mental and physical illness.

Always remember doing anything new takes time to build a sense of belonging will take time. Be patient with yourself… there is no ‘right’ way to go about it.
It is a choice you can make to belong, to overcome the feelings of not belonging.
Here are some ideas that might help:
- Focus on what you have in common with the people currently in your life.
- Volunteer for a cause you are interested in to support others.
- Plan an outing to visit someone you care about or would like to know better.
- Ask more questions to understand people and get to know them better.
- Look for new groups and new activities to participate or join in the fun!
As adults, we rarely acknowledge the importance of fun. Being part of a social group fosters belonging, it encourages us and motivates us to venture outside the comfort zone.
